Test Format
The ACT is a 3 hour and 25 minute exam (2 hours and 55 min without the optional writing section) that consists of 4 multiple choice tests in English, Math, Reading, and Science and an optional essay writing section. The format of the test is as follows:
English
Question Types: 75 multiple choice questions
Content: punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, strategy, organization, and style
Length: one 45-minute multiple choice section
Math
Question Types: 60 multiple choice questions
Content: Numbers and Operations, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry (coordinate and plane), Trigonometry
Length: one 60-minute multiple choice section
Reading
Question Types: 40 multiple choice questions
Content: passage based reading comprehension
Length: one 35-minute multiple choice section
Science
Question Types: 40 multiple choice questions
Content: measures interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem solving skills by presenting scientific data sets followed by multiple choice questions. This section does NOT test specific science knowledge (e.g. chemistry, biology, physics, etc.)
Length: one 35-minute multiple choice section
Writing
Question Types: 1 essay question
Content: Respond with your point of view to an essay prompt.
Length: one 30-minute essay
